Homeless Link Research Forum is being held quarterly and brings together researchers and consultants working in the homelessness sector, as well as commissioners and service providers who are interested in research. The Forum aims to create opportunities for joint learning and discussion, particularly in ways that lead to practical insights that can be directly applied to participants' work in the homelessness and adjacent sectors and help develop our practice. This is also a space for people to connect and support each other. This year, the theme of the research forum is Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
Overcoming sampling bias: ensuring representation and diversity in our research
We all agree that considering and carefully choosing who we include in our research is incredibly important. However, we are also aware that we all bring our own lenses and biases to the data sampling process and that our knowledge is often drawn from data that is itself neither truly inclusive nor representative. Given this, how can we work to ensure that our research better reflects the diverse experiences of people who are homeless? How can we better understand the population of interest, and so, who should be included in our research? How do we reach out to people, or communities that we don’t currently have relationships with? In short - what are some of the stumbling blocks to representative and inclusive data sampling and how can we work to overcome sampling bias?
This session will address the practical barriers and concerns of data sampling and we will be inviting speakers who will be sharing how they overcome these challenges.
